Making world-class content easily accessible on mobile devices
The Challenge
STV is Scotland's home of news and entertainment, serving audiences with high quality content on-air, online and on-demand. They reach 3.5 million viewers each month, while airing some of the most popular shows on UK television.
The STV product teams had long been focused on web-delivery for their content portfolio, however there was a desire to test market demand for a mobile-first approach. To do so, they required a development partner with strong mobile experience and expertise to take the lead on delivering the STV mobile roadmap.

The Solution
Working closely with the STV product team, we set about designing and building a fully-native Android and iOS on-demand video experience that would revolutionise the way users consumed STV content.
With mobile technology changing at a rapid pace, we worked to ensure the STV app could keep-up with the latest leading edge developments, by building the pipeline for future features in advance, ready for roll-out.
As the News function of STV is particularly diverse, drawing from eight different regional sources, our multi-disciplinary and cross-organisational development team had to ensure the frontend of the app was highly-intuitive and able to support high volumes of content.
It was vital that the STV team would be capable of independently managing product delivery post-launch, so with this in-mind, we helped to upskill and transition STV’s internal team.
By acting as the delivery lead for the project, we took ownership of the full delivery process, as this large-scale project laid the foundations for a vital part of the future roadmap for STV.
With the partnership now moving into beyond its seventh year, xDesign now continues to provide specialist support to the STV team in a flexible, augmented model.
